Ice Skating Birthday Party - Games, Cake and Fun!

My daughter asked for an ice skating party and an ice skate cake.  The party sounded easy.  The cake, not so much!

Here's what we came up with.

I laid cupcakes down in a formation of a skate.  Then I added blue food coloring to white frosting and frosted the cupcakes across each other to create the look of a single cake.  Using pull-n-peel licorice, I made the criss cross ties of the skate.  Finally I used a stiff ruler and covered it in tinfoil to make the ice-skate blade.

For fun, my daughter and I also made individual cupcakes and simulated the same skate look with marshmallows and a piece of gum with a silver wrapper for the blade.  Takes a little imagination to see the skate on this one, but the kids loved it.

For the ice skating party, we shook things up by having the kids play various games on the rink. Some skate games:

Freeze skate.  Play music and when you stop, have the kids freeze.
Red Light, Green Light.  When you say green light, they skate.  When you say red light, they stop.
Mother May I.  Guests take turns asking "Mother May I" and fill in the blank.  They could ask to slide forward, skate two lengths, do a turn, etc.  The goal is to get to the person who is "mother" first and then they get to be the "mother".  The mother can chose to say yes you may OR come up with something different by saying, "No, but you may ____".
Four Corners.  A favorite at our house for ice skating, swimming pools, gymnasiums, family rooms!  Number the 4 corners of the ice rink 1-4.  Then let the kids skate.  You can count to a certain number or play music.  When you stop the music or get to your number you are counting to, everyone needs to have gone to one of the 4 corners.   Call out a number 1-4.  Whoever is in that corner is out.  You keep going until you have one last person remaining and they are the winner.
Simon Says.  The person who is Simon, tells the skaters what to do.  He/She always begins with "Simon says..." you may add touch your head, skate in a circle, link arms with a friend, touch the ice, etc.  Everyone follows.  However, IF Simon doesn't say Simon Says first, no one should follow.  Anyone who does at that point, is out.  Whoever is left last gets to be Simon.

Dance to Favorite Songs.  Hokey Pokey, Macarena, Chicken Dance, etc.
Hula Hoop.  Just for fun - see if you can, while you skate!

We served hot chocolate and birthday cake and sent the kids home with a little goodie box(these came from the dollar store.  I think there were six boxes for a dollar!).  You could also make each girl a homemade scarf out of fleece for a fun favor idea.  Simply cute 6" lengths of fleece fabric (use the whole width). You can fringe the ends and no sewing is required since it is fleece!

A fun and simple way to celebrate the day.

Another fun addition to this party or winter birthday treat is our snowman treat ideas we posted last year!
